The Derby Telegraph gets letters each day from readers on a wide variety of subjects. Here, Alan Bryne reflects on a stressful trip.
Well it’s coming to that time of year again. The school holidays will be here and once again the rip-off starts.
My wife and I have just taken a break before the little dears breakup. It started with going to one, in our opinion, of the worst airports, our very own East Midlands Airport.
First we had a lift there; to drop off it is now £2. Then we come to so-called duty-free where everything is more expensive than on the high street.
When it was time to fly I think we walked halfway to Bulgaria to get on the plane. No buses, they don’t seem to like to use them, keeping the fuel costs down.
On our return – yes you guessed it – the walk from the plane to the cattle shed. Has anyone ever noticed there are other planes landing right behind yours, thus creating a long queue outside, and you have to pray it’s not raining.

On entering the cattle shed you can see the customs post in front of you, but you have to zigzag for what seems a mile or two just to get there.
One bright spot in all of this, instead of paying £65 to park at the airport for a week, we had a lift there and got the bus back to Derby, then on to Ripley, cost one Gold Card user £9.
