One of Derbyshire’s oldest manufacturers which can list the Queen as one of its customers has launched a search for new staff.
John Smedley, based at Lea Bridge, near Matlock, is looking for seamers and linkers to help it manufacture its range of fine-gauge knitwear.
The firm is steeped in history. Its factory started life in 1784 producing muslin fabric and spinning cotton and in 1825 moved on to making garments.
It started exporting its products in 1914 and in the 1950s and 1960s John Smedley became the brand of choice for many famous faces, including Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and The Beatles. Today, its garments are still exported all over the world.
