A Derby business founded when Queen Victoria was on the throne is to double its manufacturing space and create new jobs.
Family-owned joinery firm J Seamer & Son is relocating from its 8,500 sq ft unit at the Sir Francis Ley Industrial Estate, in Shaftsbury Street. It is one of the biggest moves in the firm’s 142 year history.
Construction on its new home – a 17,000 sq ft building at Victory Park, close to Rolls-Royce’s civil aerospace division – is set to be completed by the end of November.

It will mean the business can increase capacity and bring in new machinery for the bespoke residential and commercial joinery services it has been providing since 1875.
The expansion will create several new jobs at the firm, which recently secured a grant and a loan from the Derby and Derbyshire Enterprise Growth Fund to support its expansion programme.
Managing director Richard Latham described it as an exciting time. He said: “When Mr John Seamer set up the business in the late 1800s, the primary objective was to produce joinery to the highest possible standard backed up by exceptional service. That remains our core business ethos to this day.
“However, in order for our business to thrive and grow in these uncertain times, we needed a new manufacturing facility that was fit for purpose and would allow us to house new, state-of-the-art machinery, ensuring our efficiency improves as our customer base grows.”

Victory Park, in Victory Road, is owned by commercial developer Revelan Developments, which is represented by joint marketing agents Salloway Property Consultants and FHP.
The deal to bring Seamers to Victory Park was put together by Hugo Beresford, a surveyor at Salloway.
He said: “The new facility is a design and build project which means that our clients, Revelan, were able to work with Seamers to understand their business and tailor the design of the facility to the individual needs of the company.
“Construction is taking place on a 1.2-acre plot, which occupies a prominent position at Victory Park and gives Seamers excellent prominence and a truly modern facility for them to grow their business from.”
Victory Park has further capacity to accommodate industrial units ranging from 15,000 sq ft up to 65,000 sq ft, available on a leasehold or freehold basis. For further information call Salloway Property Consultants on 01332 298000 or FHP on 01332 343 222.
